Selling a car in Northern Territory: what you need to know
- In the NT you must lodge a notice of disposal with the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) within 14 days of selling — you can email it to mvr@nt.gov.au — so fines and tolls after the sale aren't yours.
- The buyer must apply to transfer ownership at the MVR within 14 days of the sale and pays the transfer fee and stamp duty.
- Since 9 February 2026, light vehicles seven years old or older need a roadworthy inspection when ownership is transferred; newer vehicles don't require one.
- An NT roadworthy inspection is valid for six weeks, and the vehicle can change hands more than once within that window without a fresh inspection.
- NT registration stays with the vehicle and passes to the buyer on transfer, so you don't cancel the rego when you sell — you just lodge the notice of disposal.
