Selling a car in South Australia: what you need to know
- South Australia does not require a roadworthy certificate to sell a registered car privately. The one exception is a car with an outstanding defect notice, which must be cleared first.
- As the seller, you must lodge a free Notice of Disposal with Service SA within 14 days of the sale. You can do it online via EzyReg or a mySA GOV account.
- Registration stays with the vehicle in SA, and the buyer has 14 days to transfer it into their name and pay stamp duty and the transfer fee (a late-transfer fee applies after that).
- To hand over the car, complete and sign the transfer section on the back of the vehicle's registration details certificate and give it to the buyer.
- A Notice of Disposal doesn't transfer the rego by itself, but it protects you from fines, tolls, and expiation notices the new owner racks up after the sale.
- South Australia charges stamp duty on the market value of the car, not the sale price, so an unusually low private sale price does not reduce what the buyer pays.
- Interstate buyers must register the car in South Australia only if they keep it here; a car sold to another state is registered under that state's rules once it arrives.
